Website Development Guide
Who?
The first point to ponder is, “Who will be doing the work?” Specifically, you need to nail down what kind of shop will do the work. There are several basic options:
- Private developers (a single person performing all work on a project)
Pros: Generally very cost effective
Cons: Development is usually a side job, often lacks a degree or significant work experience, usually develop at night or weekends which creates a communication barrier. If the developer gets a better job, you’re pushed to the back of the line.
The Bottom Line: Since work experience might be lacking and you’ll most likely be a side project, you’ll get what you pay for relating to design skills or custom programming.
- Overseas Development Teams (typically India, China or Russia)
Pros: Extremely cost effective, proficient in basic projects
Cons: ½ day or more time gap, huge communication barrier, no recourse if the project doesn’t meet contract requirements, not up to date on cutting edge methods for style, design or strategy, culture gap in relation to American marketing and technology.
The Bottom Line: While this is the least expensive option short term, time considerations as well as communication, language, culture, and tech barriers quickly overcome any advantages.
- Large Corporations (massive companies that handle accounts for Fortune 500 companies)
Pros: Highly skilled, stunning work
Cons: Extremely expensive, hard to connect with and be seen as a quality client unless you have a multi-million dollar development budget, often focus on a specific style resulting in degrees of inflexibility and less accommodation of client’s desires.
The Bottom Line: These corporations have numerous Fortune 500 company clients and it’s very easy to get lost in the mix and get little to no attention. Although they almost always provide stunning work, it is extremely expensive and all projects tend to have common elements.
- Use Existing Resources or Hire a Dedicated Employee
Pros: Hand-choose the person responsible for the project, have their undivided attention
Cons: Projects that bring in money will be worked first (i.e. not an in-house project), lack of expertise and up-to-date technology, expensive equipment. In house staff don’t have variety of client experience to draw on or have technology colleagues to brain storm with.
The Bottom Line: Your business should focus on doing what it does best. If your business is finance, construction or medicine you should focus on doing those things, the things that contribute to your bottom line. Utilizing a development team is better, faster and even more cost effective.
